Urinary Incontinence

Especially in woman, woman suffer from urinary incontinence at early age and later age and all time the standard operation used to be an opening and lifting the bladder through a large opening. With the newer technology use of the slings and use of meshes, Dr. Khawand has been at front end of this technology and uses this for all the woman and this is being done also now as outpatient or overnight stay at the hospital to restore incontinence or prolapse in woman mainly.
There is one area that is not usually touched by the standard urologists and this is the treatment of the disabled patient and I mean by disabled, the patient who has suffered spinal cord injury and became paralyzed and this is an area very sub-specialized in Dr. Khawand’s practice. People who suffer a stroke or spinal cord injury the time at which the patients paralyze, do suffer from a variety of diseases. On of them is what you call the neurogenic bladder or the bladder that becomes paralyzed along with the bowel. Dr. Khawand is expert in treating people with this disease. There is also problem that can occur with this and the patient becomes very incontinent or they become very sick from a disease called dysreflexia, which is a firing of the bladder without any knowledge since the patient has no control after he suffers the paralysis. Sometimes the bladder can fill up very small amount and fires and can create a lot of problem for the patient because the patient is totally unaware of it. In those, problem can be what we call the dysreflexia, which is increase in the pressure in the bladder that usually results in the increase in the blood pressure and sometimes the patient can have a stroke. So Dr. Khawand has had seminar treating patient and teaching people in the community how to take care of this problem.
As far as other things that can be done, Dr. Khawand has used Botox extensively for patients with a small bladder as a result of higher injury in the spinal cord and has found very good success in restoring some of the bladder capacity, which enables the patient to avoid subsequent problem.
